Book of Aztec Review

Book of Aztec Review

While some considered them played out, others can’t get enough of classic ‘Book of’ slots. So, what are my thoughts on Amatic’s interpretation of this classic slot theme?

Well, I have mixed feelings. With a subpar RTP and max win, I’m inclined to say that Book of Aztec doesn’t hold its own compared to similar, rivalling slots. Then again, it might be a worthy option if you enjoy less volatile slots, and the gamble feature is a nice additional bonus feature.

Read this detailed review to learn more about my experiences playing this slot. I’ll tell you everything you need to know to decide if Book of Aztec is worth your time and money. Here’s what I’ll cover:

  • Game Mechanics – I’ll discuss the 95.09% RTP and medium volatility and how these affect your chances of winning.
  • Bonus Features – I’ll explain the free spins round and its special expanding symbol, which can lead to decent payouts.
  • Comparative Analysis – I’ll see how Book of Aztec stacks up against similar “book” themed slots in the market.

Courtney’s Overall Impression

Book of Aztec is a somewhat worthy addition to the long list of ‘Book of’ slots.

We’ve got the standard free spins feature, but contrary to many similar slots, Book of Aztec’s medium volatility makes the base game a little more eventful. However, this also means you get a significantly lower max win than other Book of slots.

To summarise, there’s nothing unique or awe-inspiring about this slot, but if you enjoy ‘Book of’ slots, it’s well worth a go.

Pros And Cons

Pros

  • Bonus Features – Although they haven’t included many innovative features, they have made sure not to omit the basics, such as free spins, wilds, and an expanding symbol.
  • Medium Volatility – This level of variance in a slot game is well suited to most players as you won’t have to wait around too long before hitting smaller wins. If you keep playing long enough, you’ll have the opportunity for more significant rewards.
Cons

  • Low Max Win – The 500x max win isn’t impressive, not even for a medium-volatile slot.
  • Subpar RTP – The RTP means you’re getting less bang for your buck than you might with another slot.

Courtney’s Verdict on the Base Game

Since Book of Aztec is a medium-volatile slot, the base game is more eventful than in other ‘Book of’ slots. The hit frequency is decent, and you can expect to trigger the free spin feature reasonably often. However, this medium volatility also means that wins are less substantial than in more volatile ‘Book of’ slots.

Courtney’s Verdict on RTP

Book of Aztec’s 95.09% is one of its least compelling attributes. This RTP falls way below the 96% industry average and means you can expect fantastic returns.

Courtney’s Verdict on Volatility

Book of Aztec’s medium volatility strikes a nice balance between the frequency and size of wins, although the max win could’ve been more impressive.

With any luck, this level of volatility should provide you with a nice mix of small and medium-sized wins.

Courtney’s Verdict on Max Win

Book of Aztec’s 500x max win isn’t awe-inspiring for a medium-volatile slot. I’d expect a max win of at least 1,000 times your stake, especially considering ‘Book of’ slots are synonymous with high max wins. There’s no two ways about it, this max win is a letdown.

Courtney’s Verdict on Features

Book of Aztec’s feature set is minimal but effective. Moreover, it’s precisely what you’d expect of a ‘Book of’ slot.

As expected, the free spins feature with expanding symbols is the main feature. Moreover, combining wild and scatter symbols in one (the book symbol) is a nice touch. It simplifies the base game while offering multiple ways to benefit from this symbol.

I also love the gamble feature that allows you to chance it for bigger wins if you’re willing to take the risk!

Bonus Rounds

Gamble feature

When you hit a winning combination, you can choose the Gamble feature at the bottom of the screen. When you’ve selected the feature, you’ll be taken to a second screen showing the back of a playing card. You now have two options:

  • Guess the colour of a face-down playing card to double your win.
  • Guess the correct suit of the card to quadruple your prize.

You can also choose to gamble only half of your win.

After the card is revealed, you can keep your new reward or choose to gamble again. But you’ll lose your initial win if you make the wrong choice.

Free Spins with Expanding Symbol

You trigger the free spins feature whenever three or more scatters appear on the reels. Before the free spins feature begins, the game randomly chooses a special symbol to act as an expanding symbol throughout the free spins. This symbol expands to cover the entire reel whenever it appears. The scatter is the Book of Aztec symbols, which also serves as the game’s wild symbol.

Theme

Book of Aztec draws inspiration from the rich and mysterious Aztec civilisation and takes you to the heart of ancient Mesoamerica.  The symbols depict explorers, Aztec artefacts, and the classic book symbol.

This theme is nothing new, but that’s not the intention. In terms of interpreting the classic ‘Book of’ theme, I’d say Amatic has done fairly well.

Graphics And Design

The graphics are okay, but nothing special at all. There are several contemporary ‘Book of ‘ slots with way more awesome graphics than Book of Aztec. Play N GO’s flagship Book of Dead is one that comes to mind.

I’m missing a bit of exciting animations and details that bring the theme to life. I can’t help but feel Amatic could’ve done a better job.

Mobile Experience

I tried Book of Aztec on several iOS and Android devices and didn’t feel it lacked features or functionality compared to the desktop version. If anything, this slot is designed with the mobile experience in mind, including optimised menus and larger buttons.

Slots Similar to Book of Aztec

Book of Ra

This classic 'Book of' slot is often considered the original 'book' game. It features five reels, ten paylines, and a free spins bonus with an expanding symbol. The adventurer theme and game mechanics are very similar to Book of Aztec, making it a natural choice for fans of the genre.

Book of Dead

Another popular entry in the 'book' genre, this slot follows explorer Rich Wilde in ancient Egypt. It has five reels, ten paylines, and a free spins feature with an expanding symbol. The medium volatility and win potential of up to 5,000x your stake make it an exciting alternative to Book of Aztec.

Gonzo’s Quest

While not a 'book' slot, Gonzo's Quest shares the Aztec exploration theme. It features innovative Avalanche reels, in which symbols fall into place, and winning combinations explode, allowing new symbols to drop in their place. The Free Falls bonus round offers increasing multipliers, potentially leading to significant wins.

Comparing these games, you can see that Book of Aztec, Book of Ra Deluxe, and Book of Dead share many similarities in their core mechanics. All three feature the iconic “book” symbol, which acts as both wild and scatter and triggers free spins with an expanding symbol.  For me, the winner is hands-down Play N’ Go’s Book of Dead due to its significantly higher RTP and max win.

Gonzo’s Quest stands out from the others with its slightly different theme, unique Avalanche feature and increasing multipliers. However, it’s more similar to Book of Aztec in terms of volatility while offering a far superior max win of 2,500 times your stake.

Key Takeaways

  • Book of Aztec offers a subpar 95.09% RTP and medium volatility.
  • The free spins feature with expanding symbols is the game’s standout feature and works the same way as in all other ‘Book of’ slots.
  • Book of Aztec is a decent ‘Book of’ slot, but several rivalling slots have superior RTPs and maximum wins.
